Lodging in Zermatt

I am wondering how you handle finding a hotel in Zermatt if you go there without a prior reservation. I understand you can drive most of the way, but then take a train for the last few miles. So once you arrive in Zermatt, is there a Travel Office or Hotel booking agency in the RR station to help travelers find accomodations?

Yes you can only drive so far then you must take a train. Zermatt can be a very expensive place to stay, and that's one reason we booked ahead of time. The Hotel Garni Tannenhof was exactly what we were looking for - clean, central, friendly, breakfast included and cheap (as cheap as Zermatt can be).

I would really hate to show up in Zermatt and be forced to spend an arm and a leg for a hotel because all of the more economical hotels were booked...just something to think about.

I took the suggestion of the previous post and tried to contact the Hotel Garni Tannenhof. I found a website, and wrote to them. Afterwards I was looking around their website more and notice the address said Austria. I could use some help contacting this hotel in Zermatt because it sounds perfect.

I believe there in an information board listing the hotels right in the train station. The nearby Ti also has a list of vacanceies. But as already pointed out, you shouldn't count on finding budget-priced accomodations just by showing up. Zermatt is a very popular place and the reasonably-priced places fill up.

You can find a complete list of hotels in the area on the Zermatt website:

http://www.zermatt.ch/en/

Go to "Book accomodation" and then click on "list of hotels". Set the search for 2-star places if you want budge accomodations. Other wise select 3-star or whatever you like. Make sure to select "Zermatt" for the town (Not Tasch or Randa) but you can leave the areas as "all". There are only a few 2-star places and it won't take you long to sort through them. If you select 3-star or all you'll get a LOT of choices.

The website should provide a link to each hotel's own website where you can see photos, etc. and check the location on a map.

It's all very well-organized. It's Swiss.

i am also going to zermatt this coming april and found some reasonable prices online and mainly off the zermatt website. basically the closer you are to main street and the lifts the more you will pay, but i foudn some nice affordable 2 and 1 star places to stay. those are fine for me because i only consider a hotel a place to sleep and shower, wheni travel i am never in my hotel unless i need to be

cant wait to ski those alps

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Since Zermatt is quite spendy for accomodations, sounds like it would be prudent to do your homework before you go. However, if you stop there on a spur-of-the-moment whim, sounds like there are phone banks and tourist offices at or near the RR station that can help with lodging.
