I am looking for a resonably priced room for my husband and myself on the outskirts where we can park a car and use public transportation into the city center
Meets your criteria: fairly reasonably priced and on the edge of Vienna. Never stayed there... but we live within walking distance of it and have eaten at their heuriger (good). I would only note that their location is very nice: right in a little wine village (Neustift am Walde) that now connects to the city. Plenty of opportunities for hikes in the vineyards and in the Vienna woods. Neustift am Walde is similar to Grinzing but is less touristy ...although I fear it may soon change. The entire main street is lined with Heurigers (cozy family-run wine gardens that serve rustic food), so there is reasonably priced food and wine nearby. 35A bus connects to the U4 metro. Will take about 45 minutes to take public transit to the first district.
If you can manage to approach via Hoehen strasse, you can pretty much avoid city driving. http://www.fuhrgassl-huber.at/piv_d/archive.php?c=l_main&w=&t=l_front.html A "real" hotel in Neustift am Walde is Hotel Schild but it is a little expensive: http://www.hotel-schild.at/ Other hotel options might be found in Grinzing and Neuwaldegg. Good luck! "Wien Wein Wandertag" (Vienna Wine Trail hiking Day) is Sept 24-25!
I should have also mentioned Klosterneuburg, which is a famous and historic little town just up-river from Vienna. Frequent trains connect you to Vienna in about 15/20 minutes. City info: http://www.klosterneuburg.net/index-english.html Reasonably priced place to stay: http://www.schrannenhof.at/
Thank you so much. That is exactly what we are looking for.
We stayed at Spiess and Spiess Apartments in Vienna last December. They were PERFECT! We had to park our car in a garage 3 stops away, but it was really no big deal. We were 50 meters from the underground and 5 min (2 stops) from St. Stephens. I would absolutely stay there again. Check them out on Trip Advisor. Enjoy your trip!
