I will be planning some time in the Interlaken region in July and would prefer not to stay in Interlaken, but perhaps Murren, etc.
Any recommendations on city and hotels would be most appreciated.

The website MySwitzerland.com has an accomodation tab that will give you ideas of hotels and apartments in any of the towns in Berner Oberland (and any place else in Switzerland).
We stayed a week in Lauterbrunnen in an apartment with a lovely view of Staubach Falls. It was great. I would recommend either Lauterbrunnen or Murren and am very partial to apartments rather than hotels.

I agree with the above comments although we stayed in Wengen rather than Murren. The alps are just incredibly beautiful in that area. Interlaken is fine for train connections but is not really quaint and has lots of tacky shops,etc. Not really charming at all. IMO Switzerland is all about the alpine experience.

We enjoyed the Chalet Raufthubel for 3 days in July, 2007. Murren, with all its flowers and scenery, was beautiful that time of year.
