lodging in or near Fussen

Rick suggests so many places! Has anyone stayed at the Pension Albrecht? The website shows it to be so clean and pleasant, but I don't want any major disappointments of course! I would love to hear from anyone who has stayed there....

I have never stayed there, but I would. It looks like a nice place. I've spend 7 trips, 14 weeks, almost 98 nights in Germany and never been disappointed. The German people seem to have a high standard.

Sometimes a room has been small, but always nice.

Of course, it looks like all of the rooms have the WC down the hall, and sometimes the shower. That is becoming unusual in Germany, but I have never found it to be a problem.

We just returned from a family trip that included that area, and I think staying in Hohenschwangau is a great idea. We stayed at Hotel Alpenstuben, which I think is just across the street from the pension you mentioned. We parked our car when we arrived and walked everywhere while visiting the area sights. I thought our hotel was very nice, and my kids loved the food served at the hotel restaurant.

We loved Hotel Muller near Neuschwanstein Castle and would stay there again--wonderful room, breakfast, and staff.

I'd second Susan's comments on Hotel Muller. We only stayed for a night but had a great time with first class service. The front desk, restaurant, etc. all were very helpful.

We've been to this area 3 times and going back again in June 2010. Fuessen is a nice little town, but we've always chosen to stay in Shwangau-Horn. We love the little village and the rolling pastures. From Horn you can look at the castles from a distance, and they are beautifully lit at night. There are plenty of easy flat and long bike paths and several nice hotels, B&B's. We've stayed in the Hotel Rubezahl http://www.neuschwanstein-hotel.com/ and it was excellent. Our family has grown larger and we can't afford the Rubazahl now. Last time we stayed at Hotel Helmerhof which is about 20 steps from the Rubezahl and loved it just as much...and it is MUCH MUCH cheaper. We thought the food at the Rubezahl was wonderful and unmatched in quality...until we stayed at the Helmerhof http://www.helmerhof.de/en/

The biggest difference in the two that I can find is that the Rubezahl provides free bike rental, but the Helmerhof has a small charge for renting the bike.

You can see more information about Schwangau-Horn here http://www.schwangau.de/550.html

Since it looks like you’re accepting recommendations beyond the hotel initially mentioned, I’m going to suggest Hotel Moserhof in Breitenwang, Austria (right next to Reutte). Check it out: http://www.hotel-moserhof.at/e-hotel.html. This is a great hotel…nice restaurant with patio…great views of the mountains from your balcony. It's very quiet and peaceful.

Terri, I highly recommend Suzannes B and B. Absolutely spotless with newly reconditioned rooms in a very nice house with a great breakfast. If you are polite to Suzanne she will give you great advice to all the other sights in the area. Easy parking 40 ft from her house and a 10 min drive to castles or catch a bus close to her house. The oldtown area is a pleasant 5-7 min walk from her house. Have a good trip.
