My wife and I (both 25, no kids) will be in Munich during Oktoberfest 2010. We'd like to stay for 1 or 2 nights. We'll be coming from Frankfurt. Any recommendations for an affordable hostel or hotel in Munich (and restaurants, while we're at it)? Neither of us has traveled to Europe before, but we are open to new experiences. Munich will be in the first week of three weeks we have in Europe.
My husband and I are going to stay in the small town of Schliersee, about 30 miles from Munich. We will take the train in the day we go to Oktoberfest. I would suggest looking for a small nearby town that has direct rail access.
Expect to pay a large premium to stay in Munich during Oktoberfest. I stayed in a relatively cheap and basic pension near the Viktulienmarkt (Pension Siebel http://www.seibel-hotels-munich.de/ warning- website hasn't been updated in years, so the quoted prices are probably inaccurate), but even that is likely to be significantly more expensive at that time of year.
Thanks! I understand it will be more expensive, so we would also be OK with staying outside of Munich and coming into town for the festivities. We will be traveling by rail and other public transportation.
Don, you might want to check out Augsburgerhof in Landsberg am Lech. I was there for the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest in 2007, and they hadn't raised there prices. Landsberg is an interesting town by itself and less than an hour from Munich Hbf with one change of trains at Kaufering.
The website is only in German and Italian, but they tried to speak English to me when I was there, so I imagine the will understand an English email. The email address is under "Reservierung".
Don,
If you're planning to visit Oktoberfest this year, it might be difficult even getting reservations in Munich at this point. Some locations book up a year in advance!
Although this is a "long shot", you might try contacting Hotel Uhland. Click on the link for "Available rooms for Oktoberfest and fairs". It tends to book up early, as it's located only a block or two from Theresienwiese (where Oktoberfest is held). Make your reservation ASAP!
Also, as "Neither of us has traveled to Europe before", I'd highly recommend pre-reading Europe Through The Back Door, as it will provide you with a LOT of useful information to travel "smartly".
Happy travels!
A couple years ago my friend and I stayed at http://www.hotelenglischergarten.de/html/rooms.html
during Oktoberfest. It's a 15 min or so subway ride to the Oktoberfest ground but it's right by the Englisher Gartens...which is lovely! :)
Have fun!
Jennifer
All,
Thank you for the input so far! Great info! Ken: we have been reading and referring to Rick's Europe Through the Back Door for the last few months, and it is full of good info.
Thanks again! If anyone would like to chime in on where to stay and what to see in Frankfurt for a day or so (our flight arrives FRA on Saturday morning, Sept. 25), that is also appreciated!!
Don, to give you an idea of prices, 10 years ago when I was there, Oktoberfest prices at the hostel closest to the train station (if I can remember the name, I'll post it) were $75 per night for a spot on the floor in the giant dorm with no places to store your gear, and they were sold out months in advance. Sending you good luck vibes on finding a place for this year!
