I'm trying to find lodging in Munich 9/29 - 10/2. Oktoberfest is making this a challenge. Anyone have some 'off the grid' lodging suggestions I can pursue? All of the recommended spots are booked. Thanks
How far outside of Munich are you willing to stay? In 2007, I stayed here, in Landsberg am Lech. It was the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest, but the hotel hadn't raised their prices, and they were not completely filled. At the time I was touring the Romantic Road, not visiting Munich, but I was only an hour by train from the Hbf.
Try the Wombat Hostel in Munich. We stayed there when I was 64. The rooms were immaculate. http://www.wombats-hostels.com/munich/
Hi, On the same block as Wombat's are two other independent hostels. On Schillerstrasse are numerous small hotels and Pensionen. These are all in the immediate train station area. If you decide to go out of town, try Augsburg, which has a HI Hostel as does Munich, the one on Wendl-Dietrich Straße is the centrally located one. Since 2009 there is no age limit in HI hostels in Germany.
I can't imagine some of the regular recommendations, such as Wombat's or Hotel Uhland, being available at this late stage in the game. Your best bet might, indeed, be to stay further afield and commute in.
I've managed to find a pension in Munich on opening day of the Fest. I wouldn't recommend it, I regularly travel without reservations and it's the only time I thought I might go homeless. I called a lot of places with no luck, then tried the TI - which looked like the Chicago Mercantile trading floor. Ultimately I went back to a phone and called more places and found a great pension a short busride from the center at a good price. If I had it to do over. I'd just pick a town along a train route into Munich and plan to ride in. The grounds close early so you should have plenty of time to get back before too late. Expect the train to be packed, however, with obnoxious drunks.
