Lodging in Madrid

We are returning by train to Madrid (Atocha) for one night before flying out the next day. Any suggestions for lodging close to the train station with easy access to the airport? Would like to keep under 80 euros for 2 people.

If you’re up for walking and are travelling light, Puerta del Sol is only 20 minutes west of Atocha station. In that part of town, I can recommend Hostal Acapulco on Plaza del Carmen. This place is great and is highly rated on tripadvisor. Go check it out for photos and reviews. It will meet your budget needs, too. Our quad with balcony was only €85 per night in November…doubles are less. Not sure how you’re planning on getting to Barajas, but the Aerocity shuttle was a great, inexpensive option for us. You can arrange a pick-up time and pay in advance online...they'll pick you up on time at your hotel. The metro requires a change or two. If you have to stay closer to the station, check Rick’s guidebook…seem to recall he has a couple of budget options around the Prado, north of the station.

WHat kinds of "easy access to the airport" are you talking about? Taxi, Metro, bus, shuttle? If you're not willing to take a cab from the Atocha area, then you're going to be stuck with a 50-60 minute journey by public transport...so they question then is, do you want to make that trip when you arrive at Atocha, or when you're heading out to the airport the next morning?

Let me second the Hostal Acapulco recommendation. I was there a few weeks ago and made the connection to the airport by train. I can PM directions from Hostal Acapulco to Atocha if you need them. Total transit time about 50 - 55 minutes.

I did this exact thing last week. I stayed at Hotel Europa (by Sol metro station, took metro there from Atocha RENFE station, three stops). Excellent location, nice staff, free wifi and internet access. Depending on day of week, may get a deal meeting your price point.

As for airport access, I shared a cab to airport in the morning (35 euros set fee for two, including bags, about 20 minutes during rush hour). The metro to airport is 2 euro, but requires two transfers. Ordinarily I would do this but was at the end of a long trip and opted for ease over price.
