Lodging in Hallstatt, Austria

I'm having trouble finding a good, and recommended, hotel/pension in Hallstatt. Lake view preferred.
Any recommendations for mid May 2013?

Niles,
Try the "Seehotel Gruner Baum" - I stayed there with a RS tour in 2010 and thought it was a nice hotel. I didn't get a lake view but the travelers who did raved about it. Rooms were large but no elevator. Hope you enjoy your trip!

We stayed a few years ago with Helga Lenz. Amazing view! We loved it.

Another vote for Helga Lenz, but be aware that it is a steep walk up from town. We thought it was well worth it.

Niles, Hotels may not be taking bookings yet for May 2013, so that may be part of the problem. I'd be surprised if they're fully booked already (although RS tours does book well in advance). I agree with some of the previous recommendations. If you want more of an "upscale" Hotel, Seehotel Grüner Baum is a great choice. If you want comfortable accommodations in a creaky older hotel (a true Rick Steves classic!), then Gasthof Simony next door is a good choice. I'm sure you'd be very comfortable in either location, and both are right on the lake. You'll probably have to specifically request a lake view (and be prepared to pay a bit more). Happy travels!

Niles, if you go to tripadvisor.com you will find all of the above mentioned places with travelers' photos and opinions.

Hallstatt has a website with information about accommodations at www.hallstatt.at. Unfortunately, they don't give you URLs or email addresses, forcing you to go through them for reservations. I avoid town booking services as well as general booking services if at all possible, because I have found that there are usually a lot more, less expensive accommodations available outside those sites. Three years ago I booked accommodations in Hallstatt using the town website, but then they openly gave out URLs and I was able to contact the places directly. I still have the list I used. Gasthof Simony is not listed on the Hallstatt website, but they have their own website. Two other places are listed on the Hallstatt website, but also have websites where you can contact them directly. They are: http://www.weisses-lamm.at http://anger.hallstatt.net The other places on my list are all Privatzimmer (rooms in private homes). If you are interested in such accommodations, send me a PM. (Some of them might not speak English.)

Niles, We really enjoyed the Gruner Baum. Big balcony overlooking the lake, it was amazing. Have fun!
