My husband and I will be visiting Munich in September. We have a few nights booked at a hotel due to Oktoberfest. We plan to travel by rail throughout Germany (Bavaria, Mosel Valley, Rothenburg) and find lodging as needed. Is this as easy as it sounds? Any tips?
That's a busy time. Lots of wine festivals in the Mosel/Rhine area too. I'd make reservations. You'll get better rates than if you scout around at the last minute when the more desirable rooms may be booked, and you won't have to waste any of your valuable on-the-ground travel time hunting something down, something that may be too far from where you want to be (which is near the train station - a limitation that you should heed unless you like long walks with luggage or taxi fares!
If you do go without reservations, the local tourist office can help you find a room. But, like Russ, I found that the better bargains in the well known stops fill up early.
