By the sounds of it Mittenwad would be a great town to stay but without a car RS suggests Fussen, any great suggestions 100euro or less?
I can suggest, from personal experience the Aldstadt Hotel Zum Hechten in the middle of Füssen. We loved hearing the bells from next door, and the beautiful view, but if you abhor the sound of bells you might consider elsewhere. Their 2011 price list shows rooms for 2 at €96-€100. They used to have some rooms with the toilet down the hall but it now appears that all rooms are en-suite.
Hi Jo, I find this interesting, as Mittenwald is so easy by train. It's a short (5 or so minute) level walk from the train station into Mittenwald. Mittenwald is also on the train line between Garmisch (approx. 20 min.) and Innsbruck (approx. 45 min.). It also has a cable car that is within walking distance of the train station and pedestrian zone. If you prefer Fuessen, I agree with a stay at the Hotel zum Hechten. We stayed here in '01 and '03. We loved our stays in both Mittenwald ('05 and '06) and Fuessen. The question in regards to that Fuessen is more convenient by train is what "stumps" me. Paul
The train that comes into Fuessen starts in Munich, and Mittenwald is on a line from Munich to Innsbruck (look at a map). According to the bahn website, the fastest connection is 4h18m through Munich-Pasing. Other, slower train connections can be made via Geltendorf or Kempten. You can go from Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by train (20 min), then take the RVO bus (about 2 hrs) via Oberammergau. Other bus connections go from Reutte and Pfronten on the Ausserfernbahn (rail line to Kempten). Although the Ausserfernbahn runs through Austria (Tirol), it is run by German Rail, and, consequently, is included with a Bayern-Ticket. So is the RVO bus. With a Bayern-Ticket you could go by train from Mittenwald to Garmisch and by bus to Fuessen, or by train from Mittenwald to Pfronten and by bus to Fuessen. If you went to Reutte, you'd have to pay extra for part or all of the Reutte-Fuessen bus because it is in Austria, but it wouldn't be much. If I were doing it, I'd stay in Pfronten. Pfronten is the name for a collection of villages on the German-Austrian border and is a very pretty town. Periodic buses run between Pfronten and Fuessen in about 45 min. I'd stay in Gasthof Aggenstein. You could also stay in Oberammergau at Gästehaus Richter. Oberammergau, in my opinion, is as interesting as Mittenwald, and much closer to Fuessen, only about an hour by bus
We really enjoyed Hotel Sonne in Fussen. We got stuck there for an extra 2 days due to a blown tire, and the hotel was extremely accommodating. They also served us a beautiful anniversary dinner.
My husband and I stayed at http://www.suzannes.de/ Suzanne's B and B in March 2009, and we loved it. Suzanne is an American who fell in love with Germany years ago, married a German and stayed in Germany. Her B and B is in an old farm house right near the train station. The rooms are large by European standards and in immaculate condition. The beds are very comfortable, and many of the rooms have balconies with outstanding views! We also loved the heated bathroom tiles on the cold winter mornings! We found Suzanne to be an excellent hostess. She prepared a fabulous breakfast for us. She explained how to tip at restaurants, where to find ATMs, the best and cheapest way to get to the castles, and the best restaurants in town. We stayed in several hotels/B&Bs in Germany, and nobody gave us more bang for the buck than Suzanne. We would definitely stay there again.
I stayed at the Altstad Zum Hechten hotel last May as well and had an amazing time! The hotel is great, well located, and the price is right. Staff was super friendly and when we decided to rent a car at the last minute on a sunday, they not only called all over town to find us a rental car at a good price but also drove us to and from the car rental place! Two thumbs up for this one!
