Lodging in Barcelona

I'm looking at getting an inexpensive hotel in Barcelona. I thought I found a place (a recommend in the Spain guidebook), but it says its in a seedy area of town, a block or two west of Las Ramblas. How bad is this area? Thanks.

Check out Hotel Lleo, it's off Las Ramblas. I helped my mother in law plan her trip to Barcelona last year and she loved this hotel and it had a great breakfast.
