Try the Cloister Inn in Prague (mentioned in Ricks Prague book) So close to everything- including Karluv Most (Charles Bridge) and the tram line which goes all over, including right up to the castle. Reasonable rates- about $150/ night USD for double;very clean and located on a quiet street. Breakfast was included, rooms were good sized and had all amenities- internet is in lobby and sometimes had a wait. Don't miss the chance to eat at Stolettli's down the street- AMAZING food and incredible prices.

This past April we stayed at Guesthouse Lida in Prague. Two metro stops from downtown, but many walk it.

GREAT hosts, nice rooms, free internet. Check all the great reviews here and on TripAdvisor.

Cynthia,
My husband & I stayed at Liassidi Palace Hotel in Venice in 2004. I am an extremely picky hotel person and we both loved this place. It was clean & updated, courtyard was beautiful, staff friendly. Location is off beaten path in a sweet local neighborhood which we loved. . .but definitely hire a boat to take you to the hotel when you arrive with your luggage.

In Venice my wife, our 2 kids, my mom and I stayed in a wonderful pensione called Pensione Accademia, located near the Accademia Bridge in the quiet and beautiful Dosaduro (sp?) District. Breakfast included, nice gardens (yes, in Venice!) and beautiful rooms with canal views. Only minutes from Piazza San Marco. Highly recommended.
