We need to catch a plane back to the states Sept. 16 and would like to stay somewhere close to Frankfurt airport on the 15th before turning in our car on the 16th. Any recommendations? Thanks, Dorsey

You have hit a bad date for wanting to stay in or near Frankfurt. The IAA, the International Car show begins on the 15th and hotels anywhere in or around Frankfurt are going to be scarce and very expensive. Even in towns like Mainz, Wiesbaden, Bad Homburg or Darmstadt, you will be hard-pressed to find something affordable. I don't know what time your flight is on the 16th, but you might do better to stay farther away.

You might drop the car on the 15th and hop on a train to Mainz. www.booking.com shows rooms available in Mainz for that night. Mainz is only 20-25 minutes and 3.90 Euros from FRA by train and a nice place to stay/dine/stroll. The FRA station is right in the airport. The Ibis is is available and one block from the Mainz Römisches Theater station in the south part of town, a short walk from the old town. The Sonnenhof is near the main station and a bit more expensive but also available.
