Location for day trips to Fusen and Berchtesgaden

We will be driving from Budapest to Venice and want to spend 3 or 4 nights en route in a location that would make a day trip to Berchtesgaden one day and Fusen another day reasonable. Just looking at a map, Bad Tolz seems to be located well (but I can't judge how much time the mountain roads would take to travel). Any suggestions??

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a great central location in the Alps for both Ludwig's castles (I assume that's what you really want to see and not the town of Fuessen itself) and Berchtesgaden, but I think it's more than a days drive from Budapest.
