Locarno versus Lugano

My husband and I will be staying north of Lausanne for three weeks this summer. We are debating a trip to Locarno or Lugano along with other excursions .( We are familiar with the BO area and have travelled in Switzerland before. ) I would appreciate any opinions on these two cities as well as suggestions of three star hotels.

judy, That's a tough choice! Both towns are beautiful and well worth visiting. Could you provide a bit of further information on your preferences (ie: what you're hoping to see in whichever town you choose, preferences, etc.)? Lugano tends to be somewhat "upscale", especially as it's one of the most important banking centres in Switzerland. There's a large Casino there, and another one part way down the lake in Italy (it's a monstrous building that dwarfs other structures in that town - can't remember the name of the town, but it's not far from Lugano by lake). My impression is that Locarno is also somewhat of an "upscale" city. Depending on your interests, you might enjoy having a look at the Madonna del Sasso Monastery, or taking a trip in the Cable Car to Cardada. The view of the city and lake from the top is incredible! There's a Cafe at the top with patio dining; having a beverage or a nice meal while enjoying the view on a sunny afternoon is fantastic! There are lots of sightseeing options in both towns. If you decide on Locarno, you might consider getting there via the scenic Cento Valli railway (at least in one direction). Regarding Hotels, I'd suggest having a look at the Guidebook or Trip Advisor, as that would be the best way to choose a Hotel that fits your price, comfort and location criteria. I stayed at Albergo Pestalozzi in Lugano last year, and it was very comfortable (I believe it's a two-star?). During my last visit to Locarno, I stayed at a Hostel and although it was very comfortable, I assume that wouldn't be an option for you (as I recall, on that occasion I was placed in a six-bed, co-ed Dorm room). Happy travels!

Thanks, Ken , for the great information! What I neglected to say in my original post is that my husband is somewhat limited in how much walking he can do. We always like to take a means of transportation to get to the highest point of view in a town and I enjoy seeing the cathedrals and churches . I had already looked at Trip Advisor and was just looking for a suggestion of a hotel on the water or with a water view that was not outrageously priced.

Take a look at Elvezia al Lago, right on the lake (Lugano) a bit out of town going toward Gandria. You migh thave to call to ask about rooms---I've never gotten a response to email.
