This year Portugal's Republic Day falls on a Friday. (Oct. 5th.) Questions: Are all the musieums / other main tourist attractions in Lisbon closed? What's the transit situation in Lisbon on the 5th like?
Normal schedule, reduced schedule, or non-exixtant? Any thoughts on Republic Day activities for two "walkers" would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom S.
I'm not sure of closures or schedules, but if you are used to walking (on hills, with polished stone for pavement!), Lisbon is very walkable. It's a small city, and the Baixa (downtown) and surrounding areas are easy to walk around (again with the caveat that there are lots of steep hills). I walk a lot, and I found it was almost too easy to wander from the Baixa through Alfama (old working class district, home of Fado) to Mourarialate at night. My mother (who is from Lisbon) would have been horrified. It is also worth noting that the national holiday (akin to the US Independence Day) is actually June 10th. I have been in Portugal for other national holidays, and transit continued though several businesses were closed and schools did not hold classes.
