My husband and I will be stopping in Lisbon for 1 day off of a cruise. We dock at 11 am and sail that night at 8 pm. It's not long so we would love suggestions on how to spend the short amount of time we have - what your top priorities would be.
I'd be sure to visit Belem just outside central Lisbon. That's where the great monastary is, the monument to the explorers and the watch tower. Then with whatever is left over, stroll the pedestrain center of Lisbon and maybe hike up the hill to the fortress. The views from the fort are great and probably the most memorable.
I would say skip Belem and wander Lisbon's Alfalma, Barrio Alto and Chiado districts. Find this store - I would have bought everything there ... http://www.avidaportuguesa.com/
Thanks so much for the tips. We are looking forward to it.
Ditto what Douglas said. We spent an afternoon/night in Lisbon before flying home the next day. We started in Belem, walked along the river, then up to Sao Jorge castle, which I'd highly recommend. After walking down the hill from the castle, we ended up in a huge square, and were so turned around, we couldn't figure out where we were on the map. My husband still laughs at me about that since I'm typically the one with the radar sense of direction.
