We are taking a cruise in May and will be stopping for 8 hours in Lisbon and for 14 hours at Normandy. We are not interested in taking the ship excursions. Can anyone tell me a couple to top priorities you have for Lisbon? Then, to tour the Normandy sights, we would be interested in a local tour group that we could connect with near the port in Le Havre. We dock at 7 AM and depart at 9 PM. Thanks.
Not been to Normandy so can't comment. But Lisbon....I love! I think you should decide to either see sites in Lisbon or go to Sintra (easily reached from Lisbon...about 30 min train ride). But I think with only 8 hours, it would be near impossible to do both. If you love castles...go to Sintra. The remains of the Moorish Castle allow you to trek all around and enjoy great views. Also there is Pena Palace which is beautiful and colorful and the National Palace. ANd the Quinta Regailera which is kind of morbidly fascinating. And the quaint little town of Sintra. I mention Sintra just because it's such a charming place and it may be of more interest to you than Lisbon. Something to consider. But ahhh.....wonderful Lisbon!! I think some "must dos" in your 8 hours if you remain in Lisbon would be - the Monastery in Belem (and eat some fabulous custard tarts next door), ride the tram, the Castle Sao Jorge (spelling??), wander around Rossio Square, be amazed at the Convento de Carmo ruins, visit Sao Vicente de fora (church/monastery) with interesting sites, nice cloisters and an amazing rooftop view of the river, have a coffee in one of numerous cafes.
Thanks Christy - That all sounds like fun and definitely gives us a lot to chew on and decide on. Going to Sintra sounds great - never considered that!
Sure Marla! If you have more questions, feel free to pm me. I love Lisbon and have been 4 times in the last few years!!
