Lisbon and Andalucia with small children

My wife and I land in Madrid at the end of October and plan to spend 3 weeks with our 3 1/2 year old and 6 month old....ambitious but we're up for it! We were thinking of hopping a flight to spend a week in Lisbon, then was going to rent a car (from back in Madrid) to explore southeast Spain-any tips for traveling with the kids? We thought of renting an apartment somewhere as a home base then doing day trips to minimize constant pack/unpack with the baby...but any suggestions appreciated. Is Malaga worthwhile as a base or better off in Granada or Seville? Much appreciated..

I cannot follow at what stage you will rent a car, but just in case, recognise the large fee for hire in one country and drop off and repatriation from another. I suggest you are better off with two bases, one in Seville, one in Granada. Yes, Malaga is central(ish) as a line almost directly north through Antequera and Lucena would also be. However, using as a base, to either Seville or Granada as day trips, will take about four hours and three to four hours, respectively, out of your day, but if it suits your style....

If you want to rent an apartment on the coast in Spain, I'd suggest looking at Marbella, about an hour along the coast from Malaga. It's a huge seaside resort and there are hundreds of places to rent. It's also a lovely place to be with kids.
For rentals, try VRBO or Tripadvisor.
