My husband and I will be in Dresden for 3 nights in September. I am considering a daytrip to Leipzig from Dresden via train. I've just looked up train schedules on bahn.de. My primary interest in Leipzig are the Bach sites plus the Stasi Museum, if time permits. Does anyone know of a good walking tour company in Leipzig? Or can I do this on my own with Rick's guidebook?
You do not need a tour guide to see the sights in downtown Leipzig. All the main things to see are within reasonable walking distance, and easily accomplished on your own, along with a tour book.
Hi, Great that you're doing a day trip to Leipzig targeting a couple of sites from Dresden; it's alot easier than what I did from Berlin. You can find out about tours at the Leipzig Hbf, a huge and marvelous place. But, as pointed out above, no need to rely on a tour just to get to sights connected with Bach.
The old town centre of Leipzig is very walkable and easily reached from the train station. In your case I'd just go with a map and a guide book rather than a tour. That'll allow you as much time as you like in the places you want to see rather than just walking by. If you don't speak German, make sure to get an audio guide for the Stasi museum as the exhibits are labelled in German only.
Thanks to all who responded so positively and enthusiastically about my plans for a daytrip to Leipzig. I just booked by train tickets on Deutsche Bahn.
I don't know if Rick Steves mentions it, but from Monday to Friday you can visit the former Reichsgericht (Imperial Court of Justice), a huge 19th century building like the Reichstag in Berlin, for free. It's the place where the Reichstag fire trial against Van der Lubbe and Dimitroff happened in 1933.
