Is it feasible to use Leipzig as home base and travel by train to Dresden and Weimar and to see the various Luther sites in the area? I am thinking of doing that and staying in Leipzig about 6 nights and going from there to the various places within 50-60 miles in various directions.
Yes, Leipzig is quite worthwhile and makes for a great home base to visit the Luther sites, Dresden, Erfurt, the Erzgebirge mountains, Potsdam, Weimar, Berlin, the Spreewald (do a boat ride there) etc. Leipzig has got very good train connections to offer and freeways going into every direction.
jerry i just spent three nights in leipzig (apr2-5), loved every minute from arrival at marvellous rail station, to the fine city museum. it is easy to do day rail trips anywhere you meantioned. two years ago i stayed three nights in lutherstad-whittenburg, and it was wonderful-friendly, beautiful too. fine judendstil architecure is all over leipzig, so i will be back.
