We are going to be traveling to Spain and to South America. I am looking for a CD series to help me learn Spanish - I have a long commute and CD's would be great. Has anyone used any that are good? Thanks
Maybe you might want to check out your local Public library? That's where I get my language Cds. But I don't suggest travelling with them, just incase of loss.
Watching Spanish TV, news and radio will help. I've even scored a few Cd's from neighbours' Garage Sales. If your lifestyle allows, consider hosting a Spanish exchange student. Check out your local Spanish community. Try some receipes! All are learning tools!
You are very smart to be learning a new language! Good for you! Don't forget to add that new skill to your resume!
Check Amazon.com for Penton's Spanish 24 language series. It is a set of 24 compact discs and 7 printed guides. I load them onto my iPod and "study" at work. Be aware, though, that Castillan Spanish pronunciation and South American Spanish pronunciation (and some words) are different. The Penton CDs tell you whether it's a phrase used in Spain or in Mexico. It's about $68.
http://www.cadenaser.com/player_radio.html is a popular talk radio station in Spain. You will get a reasonably wide range of accents and a good feel for current events. The more Spanish you hear before arrival in country, the easier it will be for you to learn the language itself. Take advantage of your local video rental store and get used to watching films in Spanish with English subtitles.
I really like the PIMSLEUR seriese - I have the spanish ones now. Tried french before. They are conversational based - great for commuting and actualy I think I learned more fasted than in my once a week nite class! They can be expensive - but try used sets on ebay for the big-30 lesson sets, or just get the 10-easy lesson sets at the book store for 20-40$.
Tom: You can also download the Pimsleur lessons to an iPod.
Larry, if you have an ipod check out the free podcasts that teach spanish........I downloaded a bunch and listened to them before we went to Madrid..and whenever we were on a train...they were pretty basic, and FREE!
