Hi! I'm traveling to France in a week to study abroad in Paris for a month, and then my dad is coming to Europe for another month so we can travel around. He's a real big Tour de France fan, and wants to watch a mountain stage. He wants to see the stage 9 from Val d'Isere to Briancon, the race starts on July 17, so we'd have to be there July 16th. I wanted to know if anyone knew where we should stay and how to get there (plane, train, etc.; and where they fly into and stuff). I have no idea about this region of France, and any help would be great!
I am strongly considering spending a few days in Val d'Isere and watching both the beginning of the stage in Val d'Isere and the end of the stage (2 days earlier) in Tignes, just above Val d'Isere. Looks like you can rent some affordable condos in Val d'Isere - it's a pretty developed resort (which concerns me a bit - would like something more rustic).
The train gets you as far as Bourg St Maurice, then there is frequent bus service to Val. Looks like some trains are already booking up - I will probably reserve mine soon.
