St Malo is right to the west, an excellent example of a walled port. Stop to see the Dol de Bretagne (probably the tallest standing stone in the world...just on the south side of the town of the same name). After St Malo, maybe Fougeres for a walled city that rivals Carcassonne. Dinan (just south of St Malo) is another neat town. After that, circle down the back way to Chartres for the cathedral. Optionally, you could press further into Brittany to Carnac (more than three thousand standing stones kind of puts Stonehenge to shame).

Also agree with Dinan, a great medieval village. Also visit Bayeux, which has the tapestry that describes the Norman "invasion" of England - important in both French and English history.

We did a 7 day drive looping from and returning to Paris. Started at Honfleur, Bayeaux and then Mont St Michel. When you leave Mont St Michel you can drive through Concale (for the fresh oysters & great views on the way there) and then on to Pointe du Grouin, if you like coastline views. Then to St. Malo and Dinan. Agree with previous post - Fougeres is great. We also stopped at Vitre and Chartres before returning to Paris. We drove from MSM to Dinan in one day. You could then stop at Fougeres and Chartres for your second day. But add an extra hour if you're returning your car in Paris. We hit traffic entering Paris and barely made it back in time. Have fun!

Drive to Cancale and have France's freshest seafood. You can watch them harvest the French supply of oysters while you eat. On to St. Malo from there, as the old walled city is a fun, interesting, quaint place to visit.

We stayed in Vitre. A smaller town with a great medieval city as well as a college town. See the stuffed frogs in the castle museum

We went to Bayeux, then to Mont St. Michel, visiting Dinan and Cancale. Great food in all places too! Do follow the advice to get Oysters in Cancale! All are great spots to visit and easy to do with a car. Personal recommendation is to take a GPS with a France map.

I will second (or third) the recommendation for Dinan. It's an easy and beautiful drive from Mont St Michel and there are standing stones in the area as well if you're interested in that sort of thing. We had only planned on staying one night, but so loved the city and its market and the beautiful valley that we decided to stay another night. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner in a creperie there on our second night. (Incidentally, we spent some time in St. Malo before we got to Dinan and I must say that in my opinion Dinan would be the far better [or at least more picturesque] choice.) We can't wait to go back.

I would agree with most suggestions. I did find St Malo very interesting- within the walls and along the harbour. Cant go wrong with any of the suggestions

I think it really depends on where you'll have been already. I agree that Brittany is tempting, but if you won't have seen sight in Normandy you might find that destination compelling. There's charming Bayeux, home of the famous tapestry and a worthwhile cathedral, also a good base for touring the D-Day beaches, if that interests you; pretty coastal towns like Honfleur, and historic Rouen, where you can (if you like) return your car and take a train to Paris.

I really liked St-Malo and Brittany too, you could also go to the beautiful villages and nice scenery of Honfleur, Étretat, and Dieppe. It would be a shorter drive to Paris.

I did a trip like yours a few years back! We drove from Paris to Normandy, toured the D Day beaches, and paid our respects to those buried on the hill. At dusk, we stood and listened as the flag was lowered. It was a moving experience. From there we ventured to MSM, had dinner and stayed on. We explored MSM the next morning and it was beautiful. Enjoy.
