Has anyone stayed in Mont-St-Michel and if so your thoughts recommendations. We're staying in a self-catering place in Normany for a week before heading on and I though it might be fun to spend one night in transit on the Mont itself, catch sunset etc. I know it is a big tourist joint during the day.
"I know it is a big tourist joint during the day." Exactly. That's why many of us recommend staying there , rather than day-tripping. You get to explore the Mont at the best time of day (night), and you can tour the abbey first thing in the morning before the tour bus invasion commences. There's only a few hotels on the island, and from what I saw, they all looked pretty interchangeable.
we just returned from France a few days ago. We spent one night at Vielle Auberge and the rooms were small but clean and had views off the mount. The mont is so small location within mont isn't important. We would stay there again and would definitely regret it if we hadn't stayed on the mount. You can roam the streets and ramparts all night and it's a treat to see the sunrise and sunset. Overnight is highly recommended, but I wouldn't stay for more than one night.
We didn't spend the night on the Mont, and I have regretted it. I wanted to be there early enough to see the tides come in...husband didn't...I lost. If you stay on the island, you can see the tides and then see everything after the crowds have left. I'm sure it would have been a much better experience spending the night there. If I make it back to Normandy, I'll definitely go back and do it that way!
Sleeping on the Mont is magical, the massive crowds of day trippers leave on their buses about 5 or 6pm and then the small # of people that are sleeping there have it to themselves until 9 or 10am next day. You can walk all around at night, up and down the walls, in the summer the lights are on the walls. The history of that place, you can feel it walking around at night.
