Layover in Amsterdam Question

My husband and I have an 8 hour layover in Amsterdam on our way back to the States. I'm wondering if we'll have enough time to locker our bags and do a little walk around Amsterdam. We have been there before so we aren't looking to see much - just have a meal, people watch, etc. Does this seem like a do-able plan? We also know we'll have to deal with security, etc.

Sure, with 8 hrs you have lots of time. Why check you bags at the beginning? We always check our bags going home because it is not problem if they do not arrive with us.

We have usually gone with one small carry on and a backpack each. We both pack foldable duffle bags with us and then when we fly back, we throw all our clothes, non-breakable items, etc. in there and check them. But given that our more valuable items are usually liquor (We like to get a certain schnapps only available in Germany), we will have to check them in anyway due to the liquid restrictions of carry ons. So, I guess with just backpacks, we should be good to go! Thanks!

There is a large tourist information desk in the hub of the airport. Walk up and tell someone there you have eight hours until the next take off and ask for suggestions of what to see in Amsterdam and how to get there. The lower level of the airport is the train station and shopping. You can easily go don the stairs to it because the stairs are near the tourist information desk . You will have to go through an immigration sheck and have your passport stamped, all an easy and simple matter. Once through the immigrations check turn right and walk a few steps and you will see the trains and the long ticket desk. Ask for a ticket to where you are going, round trip, or use the auto kiosks if you can figure them out. Find your train and go. The train to South Station (Sud) takes you to where you would catch a tram, No. 5 to the museums, Van Gogh and Riksmuseum. There are other trams that go that way too from Central Station. Just ask for help as the tourist information desk. There is absolutely no language barrier so don't worry about that.
