Lauterbrunnen Valley in early October?

I know we can't predict the weather with any certainty but I just want to hear from anyone who has been in this area at this time. My daughter and I want to take a trip back to Muerren but she can only get away from about October 10. I know the days will be shorter and anything can happen weather wise, I wonder if we should risk it or put it off for another year. I am hoping to base my decision on other posters experience.

I've been to the region several times during October, and the weather has been fine. It terms of rain it's actually one of the driest months. Temperatures can fluctuate, some days up into the 80s, the next day temps in the 50s. All trails open, no snow in the lower or mid elevations, but the mountain peaks start getting covered in snow again this time of year, which makes it more scenic than the summer. Crowds are smaller, and hotel prices lower; I say go for it! In October the hotels in the mountain villages begin shutting down until the ski season starts up. For lodging Interlaken, and Lauterbrunnen would be a better choice.

Pretty good time of year, go for it. But just make sure plan for a couple of days, as the weather in the Alps is always a crap shoot.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. And so what if the weather turns crummy. We'll be in the best place on earth!

Ditto--I was there last October and we had a bit of everything, which is also what I've had at other times of year--sunny and genuinely warm, pouring rain, fog... I think it's important not to plan TOO short a trip, since it would be a shame to only plan for a couple days and have those be the rainy days. It seems like the weather is changable enough so that if you're there 4 or 5 days at least, you'll have some variety. The lack of crowds was great. Some restaurants and shops had already closed for the season, if that matters.

Thanks Christy,
Lack of crowds is great and we were thinking 5 - 6 days. We were there last year in August and it was just too hot though we had a great time.

We were in Grindelwald in 2007 in Oct and loved it.( Oct 7-14). Some of the restaurants were closing the weekend we were there, but we did not have a problem finding a place to eat. The weather was warmer than I expected. When we went up to the Mountain tops it was cold but we had mostly warm pleasant weather. I have also been to Lauterbrunnen in Sept. and it snowed. It is the most beautiful area I have ever been to. Take clothes that you can layer.
