How is the easiest way to get from Lauterbrunnen to Zermatt? Will have rental car but am thinking train, if available, would be much easier. Have been given two routes- one showing driving to Berne and coming around through Martigny and the other, much shorter, shows going to Spiez and turning directly south. Too many questions!

The train is easy. It takes 2 hours 40 minutes and runs frequently. You change at Interlaken Ost, spiez, and visp. If driving, that shorter route from spiez goes through the new Lötschberg Basistunnel. It is 36 km long. The train goes through it too.
