We are visiting Lauterbrunnen in mid April. Any recommendations for what to see or hike to??
Worst time of the year to visit. Not enough snow to ski, but too muddy to do any interesting hiking. Also, most of the tourist infrastructure in the high villages shuts down temporarily. The farmers use this time to fertilize the pastures, which involves spraying liquid manure with a power hose. It smells lovely. As James noted, visibility often sucks. When the clouds move in, you can barely see 10 meters ahead of you. I suggest you wait until June, or if that isn't possible, go somewhere else.
Thanks to Tom and James! Unfortunately that's the only time I'm going to be able to make it on that trip. I'm going to be in Zurich and wanted to at least try to see some Alps. What % of the time would you estimate that it is cloudy?? Would there be another part of the Swiss Alps that would be less likely to be cloudy?
Vielen Dank!
Ticino canton probably has a higher chance of clear weather, but only marginally. If you'll be in Zurich, the closest Alpine areas are in the cantons of St. Gallen and Schweiz. My recommendation would be to plan a day trip to either area, but be flexible. Monitor the weather from the live images on the TV channels (there's usually 2-3 channels devoted solely to live pictures of the mountain conditions), and head to the mountains at the first sign of good weather.
Tom, Thank you so much. Excellent suggestion!
Hi! I was on Lauterbrunnen in June and it was the most beautiful place we visited. I know everyone is going to say the weather is not ideal, but there are still lots of things to do. The best three things we did (we had rain and clouds while we were there) were visit Trummelbach falls (you must walk the trail along the creek to get there...don't drive, you'll miss out) because they are semi-covered and inside the mountain and the mist and rain just makes you feel like you're in a Lord of the Rings movie, eat at the big brown house restaurant/bar near the train station (try the 4 seasons pizza. YUM), and rent a bike and ride all the trails and roads everywhere you can. Even if it rains and you get soaked, you'll see great beautiful things (my favorite was the cows with the real cow bells on) and enjoy your trip.
