I am about to book accommodations for a trip in October. I have stayed in Lauterbrunnen/Murren numerous times and I know the scenery is brethtaking there. I recently saw photos of Kandersteg, which also looks beautiful and thought about staying there this time. Has anyone stayed in Kandersteg? We will be hiking in Murren, want to see Trummelbach Falls, maybe do a trip up the Shilthorn or Junfrau, and day trip into Lucerne. So our location needs to be convenient for those activities. Any advice on one place over the other?
We include 1 to 3 nights in Kandersteg in every trip to Switzrland (actually we stay up at the lake in the mountain inn, HOtel Oeschinensee). http://www.oeschinensee.ch/english/summer.html Yes, it is beautiful there. But it would not be a good base for hiking and other activities around Mürren or the Jungfraujoch. Kandersteg is 1 hour 42 minutes by train from Lauterbrunnen; 2+ hours from Mürren. kandersteg to Luzern for a daytrip would be 2 hours 40 minutes if you go the fast way; nearly 4 hours if you take the scenic route (golden Pass via Brienz). For the things you wish to do, if you don't wish to stay in Lauterbrunnen again, why not Mürren or Wengen, or even Grindelwald?
Thanks, Lola. That was exactly the kind of information I was looking for. We will probably choose Murren or Lauterbrunnen. You just can't beat those views! And everything we want to do is readily accesible from there.
You might also want to consider any town along Brienzersee (particularly Brienz). Its only about 20 minutes from Interlaken Ost, and from there a short trip to Lauterbrunnen. Brienzersee is gorgeous and something completely different from Lauterbrunnen. Riding the train up to the Rothorn and hiking from there is also amazing.
Brienz is gorgeous. We had a half day there, and I would go back. It was a lovely, sunny day. The boat ride was wonderful, since we missed out on that in Lucerne because of heavy rain and fog. I'd love to hear what you finally decide.
Thanks for the tip about Brienzersee. It looks like someplace we would like. We may stay in Murren one night just to be at the top of the the Alps. But I didn't think it very practical for a multi-night stay because of the trips up & down the mountain each time we went out for the day.
