Planning on being in the Lauterbrunnen area on the 25th -28th of April 2008. Have not been able to find a budget room. Seems everything is closed at this time. Can anyone recomend a hotel or room open for this time period somewhere in this area or maybe Grindelwald.

Late April is right in the middle of "shoulder season" when the area transitions to summer from winter skiing. Many places close. You'll find the entire area quite quiet.
It looks like the Hotel Silberhorn is open (www.silberhorn.com). A double room would be 150CHF/night ($150/night) so it's not a budget rate. We stayed there last year and it was just great.
You might also look into the Hotel Staubbach which is less expensive. There are only 7 hotels in Lauterbrunnen. I believe that there is a hostel in there somewhere.
If all fails there, you might look into the Chalet Fontana in Murren which has really good budget rates but again, Murren will be very quiet but beautiful nonetheless. You can email Denise at [email protected] to see if they are open.
Last resort could be Interlaken which is a much larger town.

Thanks for your reply Larry. Looks like there are two choices for this time of year. A little more than I want to pay but may have to if I want to stay in this area. May adjust my travel plans. Is there a chance I may find Zimmer Frei signs at this time of year?

Good timing on this message. I am ready to make reservations at the Silberhorn. Can anyone tell me the difference between the standard and the plus room. The plus rooms cost 30 SF more.

We have stayed at the Hotel Silberhorn in their new annex which is a separate building behind the hotel. It's higher with great views. We stayed in a standard double room. It was great. We needed nothing more. I don't know what the "double room plus" gets you.
What you can do is email them. I've done this a couple of times in my planning and they do respond quickly. Email - [email protected]

I'm not sure about Silberhorn (I don't remember why we didn't book that one), but we just booked at Hotel Staubbach for 140 CHF for a double balcony room (May 7, 2008). We did a detailed review of both and decided on Staubbach. Just another option to look into as mentioned in an earlier post.
