We will be going to Rome, Florence and Venice with our daughter's art class in June. We have a couple of days before Rome that we'd also like to visit one of the graduate schools that our son is looking at. Our question is which one? Lausanne, Switzerland or Koln, Germany? We don't have time to do both and we'd only have 2 days there. Which is easier for leaving and getting to Rome? Recommendations for getting to Rome from there? Thank you!
German Wings flies inexpensive nonstop flights from Cologne to Rome (80 Euro + luggage). 2 hour flight. Its 12 hours on the train with changes.
Lausanne is 6 1/2 hour with one change in Milan.
Koeln would be easier and easy to see in 2 days (more like 1.5 realistically)
I agree on Köln...I think your travel options are better (flying). I've been to Lausanne, but I don't think there's an airport right there...probably have to go to Geneva. Are you making this decision based only on relative ease of getting into and out of one or the other? It seems to me that you son's preference should be a factor. Does he rank these universities equally? If not, why not visit the city that is home to his first choice regardless of how easy/hard it is to get there or to Rome from there?
Thank you for the information. Both cities have great schools and our hope is to visit the other one on another trip. We have such a limited time on this trip that we were trying to see if we could get one of them in. It'a nice to know about the airline piece.
