We did a house exchange near Lausanne some years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the area. You can travel around the lake on boats. We used that mode of transport to visit the Chateau de Chillon. Highly recommended! From there you can walk to the town of Montreux. The town of Martigny has a good modern art collection at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda. Also, a car collection. It seems that Pierre had wide-ranging tastes. Gruyere is an adorable medieval village, famous for its cheese; and the nearby city of Fribourg also merits a visit. There is a "route du vin" along the lake. I can't remember the name of the village we visited; but it was very scenic, with lots of wineries and good restaurants. We used a Frommer or Fodor guidebook, so you should be able to get specifics there.
