Laundromats a Must

We're traveling for 25 days with one carry-on each. Laundromats will be almost as important to us as restaurants, particularly in Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Berlin and either Budapest or Vienna. In Berlin we're staying in the vicinity of the U Bahn Oraniernburger Tor Station, in Budapest we're near the M2 Batthyány tér, and in Vienna near the U3 Station Neubaugasse. Any help would be much appreciated.

hi, this is why i like RS books. he will have info like this. according to his 2012 book. Waschsalon 115. Open daily 0600-2300. exact $$ required.
Trostrasse 115 you may want to verify this. however, when i wasnt staying near any of his haunts, i would ask the lodging i was at and they usually had info for me. happy trails.

The RS guidebooks are pretty good about listing locations of laundromats. Your hotel can also direct you to the nearest one. You can also do some basics in the hotel sink. Bring along travel packets of detergent (often sold in travel or sample aisles) or fill a small travel bottle with detergent. You have to wring dry or roll in a special drying cloth, then hang over things to dry (I've never had much luck with clothes lines attached via suction cups). Be warned that heavier cotton items take a good 24 hours to dry. Some hotels will have a laundry service for a cost. I've never minded doing my own but for some the cost is worth it to spend their time seeing sights. If using a laundromat, bring plenty of coins as some will not have change machines. Most use a central payment machine - you fill an empty machine with clothes/detergent, then put your money in the slot (or choose the buttom) that matches your machine number. It can be confusing at first but most people are friendly enough to help you out. You can buy soap or bring your own. You may find you'll need to hang some things at the hotel as the dryers are expensive and run short.

Waschsalon 115 is at Torstrasse, around the corner from RS recommended Circus hostel. Eco-Express Waschsalon is nearby on Danzinger Strasse 7. Schnell & Sauber is located in Prenzlaurer Berg at Oderberger Strasse 1. Just copied this from his 2012 book. I will have the same situation when we travel in Germany. My free afternoon in Germany will be doing laundry. We have always found one near Rick's recommended hotels or used his suggestions. The laundry was a bit far in Ireland. I staked it out ahead of time in the rain. On our free afternoon there I had already made reservations and it wasn't so far after all in the sunshine.

Hi, Where you are staying in Vienna, ie, near the Neubaugasse U-Bahn station is where Mariahilferstrasse is, the 2 streets intersect. I know the area...just down from Westbahnhof, ca 20 min. walk. There is a laundromat further down on Westbahnstrasse ...Schnell und Sauber Wasch Center, Westbahnstrasse 60, 1070 Wien...the same zip code area as the Westbahnhof. You can always do the laundry at a hostel. The Wombats Hostel in Berlin has such coin operated facilities, one station after Alexanderplatz. On the U and S-Bahn you're not that far from Wombats.

One reason that I like to stay at the Gasthof Goldener Greifen in Rothenburg is that they will do laundry for you. You have to be there at least two days for them to work it into their schedule. Again in Rothenburg, I have done laundry at the launderette at Johannitergasse 9 - Rick's recommendation. It worked fine. I also take underwear (jogging apparel) that can be hand washed and will dry overnight.

Thanks for the good information. . . nothing quite like the Helpline. In response to Fred's question were staying at the K+T Boarding House on Mariahilferstrasse. I assume most places sell laundry detergent, etc. We've always been impressed with the Laundromats in Europe, they're much cleaner (pardon the pun) than here in the US.

Hi, I don't know at which end K&T is located on Mariahilferstrasse, but you're not too far from Westbhanhof ca. 15-20 mins walk? Opposite of the station (taking the Mariahilferstasse Innere exit...there are 2 Mariahilferstrasse exits...Innere and Aussere, which is the one I take) is one of those cheapie food markets, almost next to the Wombats Hostel. You can find laundry soap (Waschmittel) etc. there. They are also at the laundry mats themselves. I know you're at K&T but Wombats Hostel has a large laundry facility with the needed amenities...quite handy.

Hi, One last note here: if you're arriving at Westbahnhof, the easiest way to access Neubaugasse (if you want to walk it) is to take the Mariahilferstraße Ausere exit. Then it's ca. 15 mins or so walk downhill. On the U-Banh line it's the second or third stop from Westbahnhof...very nice area to walk and stroll around. As for restaurants, ie., good cheap food in the immediate area, I recommend Schnitzelwirt, Neubaugasse 52, off of Mariahilferstrasse, this one esp if you want good Austrian/Viennese cusine. Some tourists go there but I didn't see any Americans.

Have you booked all your accommodations yet? We always try to book at least one place, often an apartment, that has a washer. That way you don't have to plan your day around using the laundromat.

Thanks again. We should be able to remain presentable with the help we've received. Between the leads on Laundromats and packing clothing that can be hand washed as well as machine washed, we'll even have time to get to know something of the places we'll visit. Are any of you posters fashion designers, or tailors/seamstresses? Maybe we could come up with a fashionable line of "throw away" clothing for traveling

Since you mentioned Budapest, and no one else mentioned it, there is a laundry on O Ut (it's in the RS Budapest book), you can drop your load there when they open and they do it for you, pick up late afternoon. It is about two blocks from the Opera House.
