At the end of this month, January, we will be traveling to Zermatt to hit the slopes. I have a couple questions. We will have a few days off from playing in the snow. What should we do, is there something to see or visit in and around Zermatt (during the winter)? Also, we will head out of Zermatt on a Saturday and our flight is out of Zurich on Sunday around 10 am. I have read many reviews/comments about spending time in Zurich versus other towns nearby such as Luzern. Any suggestions on how we should spend our last day and where (easily accessible to the airport in Zurich)? I've read a lot of suggestions but my concern is it will be winter and most suggestions have been for summer visits. Thanks! Appreciate any advice.
With your flight departing at 10:00am, you won't be able to be too far from the Zurich airport on your last night. Zermatt is way too far and anything in the Berner Oberland is also too far. Lucern can be a very good choice. From Lucerne, you are 1hr20min from Zurich Flughafen (airport). The airport stop is under the building across the street from the main terminal. There are elevators and escalators up into the terminal. From Lucerne, I see trains departing as early as 4:55am to get you to the airport. Our choice was to stay at the Zurich Hilton and take their shuttle over in the morning.
