Itinerary for April 2011: Day1-4 Paris
Day 5-8 Burgundy We will be renting a car to get to Burgundy on day 5 to facilitate our travel through the countryside. We are normally train people but it looks like a car is the way to go in this mostly rural area. Last day before we head back to the US is 'free'. Anyplace between Beaune and Paris or near the airport we should see? Last night in Paris city center seems a little silly if we have a noon flight from DeGaulle, especially if we need to return the car there. But, I also don't want to just stay at an airport hotel because we want to maximize our stay and see the most we can in a short time. We have been to Paris once before but were not out of the city that time. Thanks!
I would considr driving bsck via Champagne, but probbly too far to stay there on your last night

You could make a first stop in Epernay for a champagne tour (Moët & Chandon ), on to see the Castle at Pierrefonds , and finally a visit to Chateau de Chantilly. Several good lodging choices in the Chantilly area and you'll just be 30 minutes to the airport.
Look into Senlis. I have never been there, but I thought it sounded nice in the guidebooks. I decided to stay at Disneyland Paris instead. Of course, we are huge Disney freaks. I realize this option would not appeal to everyone. One advantage is that there is a really fast (10 minutes) train from Disneyland Paris to CDG. It's expensive though, but on Sunday morning it's not bad.
I did stay in Senlis on my last night in France. It is a very easy drive down to the airport in the AM. You even have time for breakfast. ; ) I remember enjoying walking around town, and seeing the church some nice gardens. I had a very nice last dinner in one of the cafes. I stayed in a place recommended by RS in his 2006 France book, but it's not in the 2007 version. Check newer versions or call RS office to see if they have the old listing. Pam
Here's something to consider. There's an early TGV from Dijon that goes straight to DeGaulle in plenty of time for a noon flight. I don't mean to suggest that you spend an extra day in Burgundy, although you could. But if you spend that last night there, you could add the extra day to anywhere in your itinerary, renting car on day 6 (not 5) to get the Burgundy a day later (but still spending the same amount of time there). Don't know if I'm explaining this very well, but you can spend your "free" day anywhere along your route. Share your route with us if you'd like suggestions about that.
