Hello everyone! Just found out I'm going to be in Spain during the Las Fallas festival in Valencia. Any thoughts/recommendations? I know if we go I need to get hotel rooms soon. Thanks in advance!
Kirsten, make hotel res. as soon as possible, and in the old part of town if you want to be in the middle of the action! Hundreds of thousands of people attend every year. We stumbled upon this festival by accident and had a wonderful time! It is very loud and noisy all night long, and the 'parades' of the different parishes or communes was a delight to behold, inhabitants dressed in traditional costume, carrying thousands of flowers for the main display near the old cathedral. We were in our early 60's but dived right in and had an absolute blast! Try to stay till the last day as that would be the best night, when they burn most of the comic figures. We had to leave one day early as we had res. in Sevilla for Semana Santa. Hope you have as much fun as we did! It was a real cultural experience for us.
We were able to get a loft about 5 min walk from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento because we bothered to send a few emails! I'm very excited. We will be there for the last 2 days of the festival.
I'm so glad you found accomodation right in the thick of things! You won't find much English spoken in Valencia, and we couldn't speak Spanish so we peppered our hotel front desk staff with questions so we could understand the festival better!
You will really enjoy yourself! If you are interested in bull fighting, which we were not, there is a major bull fight during the festival and we saw El Cid 'all dolled up' on the day of the fight, walking through the lobby of his fancy hotel! We were having a coffee break from walking our feet off (actually just an excuse to use a fancy toilette)!!! Have fun!
