Tyler, we stayed in a $165 per night hotel room this summer that provided only LAN. I had one with me. The hotel would provide one but I did not want to wait.

Oh yes! Ethernet cable! 68 here and have senior moments.

If your laptop is designed for world operation (I've never seen one that wasn't), all you need is a plug adapter to fit the European plug. Make sure your laptop's input voltage says something like "110-240v" and you'll be fine.

Bring a cable modem cord in case the hotel does not provide one.

My first attempt at using WiFi was this summer, so I went to Starbuck's to test it. LOL.

I also installed Hot Spot Shield. Hotspot Shield also makes you private online making your identity invisible to third party websites and ISP’s.

I assume you mean an Ethernet cable? Most hotels these days use Wi Fi for guest Internet, so such a cable would not be needed. But, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to bring one along, just in case.

Most business class hotels use LAN instead of WiFi as it's faster and more reliable. WiFi can easily get overloaded, and there are always dead spots. Over the past couple of years I've stayed at newer hotels in Germany, Italy, Beijing, Hong Kong and Tokyo and they only used LAN. In a couple of week I'm staying at a hotel in Switzerland which has just been refurbished and they decided to go the LAN route as well.

LAN is certainly better than WiFi. I just haven't stayed at any hotels that have it, and from my limited experience, I assumed it was the most prevalent Internet option these days. I have a feeling you will probably get LAN only in bigger hotels, as it's more expensive to set up than WiFi. Small establishments and places like family-run B&Bs will have WiFi.
