Language Immersion in Spain

I am an experienced European traveler who loves to take in the history and culture around me. I tend to prefer small-town charm and history to big-city brilliance. I'm hoping to do a Spanish-language immersion program somewhere in Spain this summer, probably for 4 weeks. I've found several immersion programs, but am curious to know if anyone can recommend certain companies or cities. Popular cities seem to be Madrid, Sevilla, Salamanca, and Malaga. I think the university city of Salamanca sounds nice, but then I wonder if a bigger city (like Sevilla) might be better for a month-long stay so that there is plenty to see and do. Also have you had any experiences, good or bad, with particular language immersion programs? There are a lot out there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

Laura - You don't say if you have any prior experience with the Spanish language. If you do, and that experience is with Latin American Spanish, then I would recommend Sevilla because the accents and the pronounciation will be similar. If your prior experience is with Castillan Spanish, then perhaps Madrid or Salamanca would be a better fit. If you don't have prior experience, then it really doesn't matter... Enjoy!

Salamanca would be good, but remember there are lots and lots of (non Spanish) students there at all times of the year, and you might not be hearing totally Spanish all the time. It is a fascinating city. Also, nearby are Avila and Zamora, both with good activities. Sevilla is a good choice as well. And, the connection with the Americas (Christopher Columbus) is amazing. You can also get to other cities in the southern part of Spain as well. Madrid would not be my choice for a Spanish-language immersion program. While it is definitely Spanish, it is also more of an intertaional business area hub. I have visited each and enjoyed each one, but did not stay a month in either.
