Still tweaking that itinerary and wanted to break this question out into a separate post. We will be In Switzerland in September and are currently considering taking boats on all four lakes (just the Lausanne/Vevey/ Montreux area of Lac Leman) but since we are trying to make things less rushed, we wonder if this is overkill. Of the four, which do you most highly recommend for scenery and for towns to visit (such as Oberhofen and Hilterfingen on Lake Thun). And since we wouldn't have to do the entire lake tour, which are the most beautiful segments?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
we have only taken a boat o Lake Luzern (Veirwaldstaettersee) but we have ridden trains along the others, several times.
I think Lake Luzern must be the most scenic, and you can connect to a wonderful loop up Rigi via cogwheel train and cablecar to the top. I would make this a priority.
On Brienzersee, I have always looked with longing across at the Grndhotel Giessbach, with th ewaterfalls behind:

The lake boats stop there and you can have lunch on the terrace, along with a walk to the waterfall.
It sounds like you already have your plans for Thunersee, and they are good.
As for Lac Leman, Chateau de Chillon is a standout, but otherwise we have found the views obscured by fog, haze, or humidity on the two times we have been there.
I can only speak to Lucerne, but I remember thinking I was in one of the most beautiful places in the world. The lake, the mountains and the town-- so lovely!
