lake region in italy

We are planning a week in the lake region of Northern Italy. We would appreciate suggestions for a small town in the area to serve as our home base for touring around that area. Of course, a recommendation for an apartment or small house/cottage would also be greatly appreciated. Three adults traveling and accommodations need two bedrooms.

I'd look into something in Stresa. Its really convenient to both Ticino in Switzerland as well as Milan and its an incredibly picturesque town. One trip that I'd encourage you to make is to ride the train north to Domodossola and then ride the Centovalli train over to Locarno. Locarno/Ancona is absolutely gorgeous and the Centovalli is a beautiful train ride in its own right. There are also many steamers/ships on Lago Maggiore that you could take. Milan is also a quick trip from Stresa if you want to see a big city. If you want ideas of staying on the Swiss side let me know and I can help you out there as well.

Dan, you might get more responses if you post this in the To the Boot section. People who are very knowledgable about Italy will be able to help you there.

A few years ago, we stayed in an apartment in a complex owned by Hotel Rigoli in Baveno. The town is just north of Stresa, on the shore of Lago Maggiore. We liked the location, and the apartment was quite nice and reasonably priced. If you look at the hotel website, you can see what they have to offer.

I'm of the same mind as Rosalyn and Marcus . We stayed in Stresa for several days last October ,and in retrospect , A week there would have been heavenly . The Borromeo Islands , the stunning lakefront promenade , the Mottarone cable car ,and the lake boats that will take you to many locatins on the lake ,all conspire to make this a very seductive place . We stayed at the Hotel Moderno in the center of town, and were very happy with the accomodations there . Also ,as Marcus says ,the Centovalli rail trip would also be a lot of fun .
