Has anyone taken the boat ride from Lucerne to Altdorf, then ridden back on the train. How much was it and was it worth the money?

It's a long time since you posted your question. Let's hope your voyage is still in the future. I have taken the steamer trip from Lucerne to Altdorf (actually, Flüelen is the port of Altdorf). If the rules have not changed, the steamers are free to holders of Eurail passes. But even if you had to pay full fare, we're talking about local transit used by the citizens living on Lake Lucerne ... you should not expect any exorbitant fares. And the steamer is a nice way to return to Lucerne too.
Even if your hotel is not the Chateau/ Hotel Gütsch (even from the train station you can see it up on Gütsch Hill) you should take the fennicular from street level and visit the Gütsch hotel café to have coffee or tea, sit on their veranda and enjoy the incredible scene spreading out before you. Or, take a steamer from Lucerne to Vitznau, board the cog train (Vitznau-Rigi Bahn) to the top of mount Rigi. Quite a sight too. Have a 'bon voyage'. All the best, P.
