Am planning to bicycle the entire lake area next fall and would like to know best places to stay, eat and sight see.
That sounds like fun, Marie. Do you mean that you will be biking all around the lake (Bodensee in German) through all three countries (4 if you count going inland to Lichtenstein), or do you mean that you will be in one country and biking throughout the general area inland and along the shore of that smaller area?
We plan to bike around the entire lake so we will indeed be in all the countries. Ideas? Anything we should skip? Must see?
I'd second Lindau (D). The Rheinfalls in Schaffhausen (CH) is just west of the lake and very impressive, and on the way is Stein-am-Rhein (CH), another really neat place. You can get between them also by boat if you want to bike one way and boat the other. I'm not impressed by Romanshorn (CH) although it is a good railhead and ferry terminal. Bregenz (A) does nothing for me. Bear in mind, for biking, that the north shore of the lake can be hilly, there is a road that goes quite close to the shore most of the way, the towns are quite nice, and there are a number of German holiday camps along the shore. The Swiss side does not have roads so close.
We thought Lindau was charming also- our vacation from the vacation chill spot. The roses cascading down many of the walls seemed exceptionally lovely.
Marie, we're biking around Lake Constance in June. This website lists accommodations all around the lake, and has a lot of other information you may find helpful. http://www.bodensee-radweg.com/lake-constance-cycle-path.html
