Lake Como Similar to Austrian Lake District?

For our anniversary, my husband and I traveled about Bavaria and the Austrian countryside. We spent 3 days in Hallstatt and the surrounding Lake District.

Faced with a bank holiday in late May, we were considering venturing to Lake Como for an extended weekend, but are concerned that it may be very similar to the Austrian Lake District. Any input from those who have been to both?

Would we be best to skip Lake Como having so recently visited Austria's pristine lake district?

Thanks for your advice.

Kay,

I haven't been to the lake district in Austria yet, but would certainly recommend Lago di Como. Exploring some of the different locations would be a perfect way to spend a weekend!

I stayed in Varenna on my last visit, and found it an ideal base for touring other locations on the lake (ie: Bellagio).

Hopefully you'll get some further replies.

Cheers!

Hello Kay. If you want to go to Italy, I recommend going to the west side of Lake Maggiore. Lake Maggiore has a more romantic kind of environment than Lake Como. And when you are there, if you want to see dramatic scenery at the Alps mountains, there is a train excursion through southern Switzerland (a loop trip).

Kay,

I visited Lake Como last year and enjoyed it very much. It is beautiful and serene. I cannot comment on the similarities with Austrian Lakes as I have not visited Austria.

If you are looking for a lively, active place it may not be your best bet but for R&R it can't be beat.

There is so much to do in Italy that it may be better to try something different as you have so recently visited the Austrian Lakes. The Italian Alps are great for hiking and relaxing and Venice is not so far from the Northern Lakes.
