I am sorry if this post shows up twice. We will be staying one week in Lake Brienz doing many day trips. The want to do 2/3 days in Cinque Terre. Is it possible, feasable to go to Austria? If so would we go Switzerland to Austria to Cinque Terre. We then fly out of Zurich. First week is set, but could check into changing if, if we did change could we do Austria, then Cinque Terre then week in Switz? Total of 15 days will buy a swiss half fare card
I would say that it can be done, especially as both destinations are, in my opinion, short stay (2-3 day) attractions. Figure on a full day on a train getting from point A to point B and B to C. You can go to the German rail site to see your train options. If you use your current itinerary, and it looks as good as any, you would save a bit of time flying back from Genoa rather than Zurich.
Lake Brienz to the CT is an 8.0-90hr. journey one-way. It will take 5.0hrs-6.0hrs just to get to Milan via Interlaken Ost and Spiez. Then, it's 3.0hrs to Monterosso. 16.0hrs round trip. Not really a day trip.
Thanks for the help. With traveling from Lake Brienz to CT being a full day would it be a trip that we could leave early morning and make it a full day getting on and off train to see different areas. If we are going to be traveling 8 hrs what is the difference it if turns into 12 b/c of sightseeing? We will stay in CT 2 nights and 2 full days and if we then go on to Salzburg would take the late train and travel through the night. Thoughts.....
