Any recom out there if Don Quixote area is really worth the time to visit or just train south from Madrid skipping this area and going straight to Granada etc.

I think that depends on how much time you have in Spain and if you have ever been there before. If time is limited or if you have never been to Spain then certainly you want time in Toledo and Granada and may not have time to dedicate to the Quijote Trail. It would also be easier to visit the Quijote sites with a car rather than train. Castilla La Mancha has a great website in both English and Spanish with lots of information about the Quijote Trail. Personally, I really enjoyed my visit to the town of Consuegra, about 60 km outside of Toledo. It is very picturesque with windmills and a castle on the hill. We also had a very good meal at a reasonable price from the menu del dia at one of the restaurants in the town.
