Traveling to Munich and Salzburg. Have an interest in visiting Konigssee in Germany. (without car) Trying to figure if it makes more sense trying to get there from Munich or Salzburg. Anyone made that journey, Thoughts??
Salzburg is much closer to Berchtesgaden (Königssee) than is Munich. Therefore it makes much more sense to go there from Salzburg. The fastest route from Salzburg is a bus that leaves from near the front of the Salzburg Hbf and goes to Berchtesgaden Hbf in a little under an hour. You can also take a train from Salzburg Hbf via Freilassing to Berchtesgaden in a little over an hour. Coming from Munich, I would get off in Freilassing and take another train to Berchtesgaden. You could also stay on the train to Salzburg Hbf and use the bus. Both the buses and the trains make the trip hourly during the day. The bus back to Salzburg makes its last run around 6 PM. The trains run until almost midnight. Either way, there are regular buses from the bus stop in front of the Berchtesgaden Hbf to the parking lot above Schönau. From there it is a 10 min walk down to the shore and the boats that go on the lake. I've been in Berchtesgaden three times, two times arriving by train and once on the bus from Salzburg. Twice I stayed there overnight; once I came in for the day on the train from Freilassing. I've taken the Königssee boat twice. I've never needed a car.
