Köln to München by car…

Does anyone have any ideas for a nice stop in a cute town on our way to Munich? We are leaving really early in the morning and would like to stop somewhere for breakfast and a little bit of shopping before heading into Munich. Please help!! Thanks!

The area Rick describes between St. Goar and Bacharach on the Rhine isn't far from Koln and makes a great stop. It's worth throwing in the short cruise between the two (less than an hour if you take the downstream leg). Park at the far end, take the downstream leg of the cruise, then catch the local train back to your car. From there you would still have a pretty good drive to Munich so you would probably want to get going before noon and bring a picnic lunch from the grocery to eat in the car. Asuming the traffic isn't bad you should get to Munich in time for check in, eat dinner, and enjoy an evening in town.

Another possibility is Rothenburb ob der Tauber depending on just how early you are leaving.

The beautiful town of Limburg in the romantic Lahn river valley is just off freeway A3 which is the Cologne via Frankfurt to Nuremberg one. www.limburg.de. Great old cathedral, half timbered houses etc etc. Depending on your Autobahn speed it's about 60 to 90 minutes from Cologne. Then, another 60 to 90 mins from there is Wertheim Village (www.wertheimvillage.com), an outlet shopping center. It's totally American and given the expensive €uro maybe not that great a deal for you. But it's also just off the freeway.
