Looking for suggestion on hotel accommodations for a couple traveling in September for one night.

Basically just passing through? I'd stay not in Koblenz but in Boppard, a bit further south on the Rhine, if possible. Nice small town atmosphere but lots of hotels and good dining choices. I have no idea exactly what you're looking for in a hotel. You might want to provide your lodging requirements to get suggestions that fit your needs, or they may be all over the map.

Thanks. Looking for one room, a couple. Private bath/shower, queen/king bed preferred. And we need car accommodations.

Sounds like you need the basics. In Boppard: Haus Weller (has parking) and Ohm Patt (offsite parking) get top-end reviews and are usually reasonably priced. I've stayed at Hotel Sonnenhof (has parking) and Hotel Hubertus (no parking), both less expensive places very close to the main square in the old town, both comfortable and quiet, fine for a short stay, with good breakfast buffets. I'd return to either one. September is a very busy time - wine festivals in the area every weekend. I would book ASAP. Boppard isn't the only option, of course, if you're just driving through. St. Goar is just upriver. For a complete listing of Boppard accommodations that includes more than just what you'll find at the standard booking engines, use the following page from the local tourist office website: www.boppard.de/index.php?id=5&L=1 St. Goar accommodations are HERE.

In case it is your objective to stay further North: I wasn't too happy with the options in Koblenz in 2011, many of the larger properties appeared tired. We stayed in a small hotel in Andernach, which is not nearly as interesting as Boppard, but very quiet and attractive. I noticed a lot of larger summer-river-front boarding-house/hotels across the river in Andernach, but didn't have time to investigate them. We stayed at Alte Kanzlei, alte-kanzlei.de , using their German online booking service. It's family owned and they have limited English. Excellent breakfast and their own, off-street parking. Our room had a huge, brand-new bathroom. No a/c. Forget about King beds except in major cities. We sometimes order twins for comfort, but had to share a double at Alte Kanzlei. Warning: The KD boat only has a "flag" stop in Andernach, and besides, it's well north of the most scenic part of the river.
