I've heard many a good thing about this brewery. Anyone have any experiences/opinions they'd like to share? We found a place (thanks to everyone here) days before the Oktoberfest celebration and are now looking for things to do in Munich.
The beer was good and the food was too. Other than that, I don't think there is much there to see and do. The church is tiny and just one more excessively gawdy Rococo church, of which Bavaria seems to have an abundance. They have a gift shop. They charge for the brewery tour, I think as I remember it was €5; I don't know if that includes a complimentary beer.
To get there, you do not need a car (in fact, if you're going to have a beer, you shouldn't drive. The beers are big). Buy an MVV Gesamtnetz Tageskarte (€10 for one person, €18 for up to five) and take the S5 S-Bahn to Herrsching. From there, there will be MVV and private buses to the monestary. The MVV buses will be included in the Tageskarte; when I arrived there was no MVV bus but there was a private bus for €2. Going back to Munich, I caught an MVV bus, and it was included with the Tageskarte.
BTW, get all the food and beer you want the first time through the line. I got to the restaurant considerably before noon and got a slice of pork and a pretzel and one beer. I was going to go back for more food and another beer when I finished that, but by the time I was ready, it was about noon and the lines were immense.
Can't thank you and your informative post enough. Some really great people here on this board. Travelers have a great way about them in their
altruistic ways. Explore, experience, and learn. Once again THANKS.
Hi Jerry,
We have been to Andech's twice in the last 3 years. Great place. We loved sitting at one of the outdoor beer gardens having lunch. On our first trip it was crowded but last time(Oct. '06) it was much quieter. There are a couple of places to get your beer and food and different areas to sit. Also, the church is gorgeous as are the grounds and the area where it's situated. We would definitely make a stop there again.

We went to Andechs two years ago. We went there via train from Munich with our local relatives. It was about a 45 minute ride. From the train, there is a path you can walk up to the top which was very nice, if you like hiking. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to the top.
We were there in July and it was very crowded, but the lines were not immense.
When we were ready to leave, we took a bus to the train. It was a nice afternoon.
Happy trails.
I loved Andechs and will definetley make it back there when I return to Munich. THe beer and food was excellent and the view of the distant Alps was beautiful!
Is the food good, yes. Is the beer good, yes. But do you want to travel from Munich to do this in Andechs? I think you can find the same thing without having to travel there. But if you're in the neighborhood, by all means stop there. The church itself is beautiful but, again, it does not call for a separate trip from Munich.
